HONOLULU – Former University of Hawai'i running back, quarterback, and placekicker Don "Spud" Botelho will serve as honorary captain at today's Mountain West game against San Jose State.

Botelho played for the Rainbows from 1954-57 and still holds the school record for longest pass play, when he and receiver Colin Chock hooked up for a 95-yard touchdown against Willamette in 1957.

The Roosevelt High School alum was also a member of the 1955 team that upset Nebraska, 6-0, in Lincoln, which is still considered the biggest upset in school history. A year earlier, the Cornhuskers defeated UH 50-0 at Honolulu Stadium.

Following his playing career, Botelho was an assistant coach at UH from 1960-64 under head coaches Hank Vasconcellos and Jim Asato before taking over as head coach and athletics director at Damien Memorial High School in 1965. He coached the Monarchs for nine years before moving to Mid-Pacific Institute, where he was athletics director and head coach for Pac-Five from 1974-2003.

During his illustrious coaching career, Botelho was a four-time Interscholastic League of Honolulu Coach of the Year and two-time state Coach of the Year. He was appointed as the Executive Director of the ILH in 2003 and continues to serve in that capacity.

In 2000, Botelho was inducted into UH's Sports Circle of Honor. He was also inducted into the Mid-Pacific Institute "M" Club Hall of Fame, Roosevelt High School Hall of Fame, and was recognized by the National Federation of High School Associations for his outstanding contributions.
