Purpose:
To encourage and promote the attainment of higher educational goals for members of high school golf teams in the State of Hawaii who have demonstrated a high level of academic achievement during high school.
Eligibility Process:
- Applicants must plan to graduate high school in the academic school year 2008-2009 and must be an active member of a high school golf team in the State of Hawaii.
- Plan to attend college full-time (i.e. 12 or more hours in a course of study leading to a baccalaureate (4 year) degree at an accredited college or university located within the United States.
- Maintain a 2.0 GPA.
Selection Process:
- Financial need may be considered.
- Applicants must submit a short essay (no longer than 250 words) about the influence of “golf” in his/her life.

- Complete application with certified copy of your high school transcript with SAT scores.
- Attach copy of Essay.
- Attach letters of recommendation.
- Obtain Athletic Director’s signature on application.
- Submit completed application, essay and transcript to:

The 2008-2009 Bill Gee Memorial Scholarship and Monte Ito Memorial Scholarship Awards
The Program
Under the sponsorship of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and Honolulu Advertiser, two $1,500 college scholarships will be awarded to Hawai‘i high school seniors or college students from Hawai‘i at the conclusion of the 2008-2009 school year. One will be named in honor of Bill Gee, the late Star-Bulletin sportswriter, and the other in honor of Monte Ito, the late Advertiser sportswriter. These scholarships will recognize outstanding achievements or potential in journalism and golf, and an appreciation of both. Scholarships will be awarded to students who, in the opinion of the judges, submit the best essay illustrating a passion for journalism and golf. Examples of published work can also be submitted to enhance an entry.
Eligibility
The competition is open to seniors expecting to graduate from any Hawai‘i high school at the conclusion of the 2008-2009 school year, or current college students from Hawai‘i who have at least one year of school remaining. Entrants need not be planning to major in journalism.
How to Enter
Entries must be received by Friday, June 5, 2009. Winners will be notified soon after. Entries must be mailed or delivered to:

Entrants are required to submit:
1. A one-to-two page essay illustrating your interest in journalism and golf.
2. This completed
entry form.
A resume (highlighting journalism and/or golf achievements) and up to three samples of your work can be included to enhance your entry. You may submit only one entry annually.
Judging
An independent panel of professional journalists will judge the entries.
