Scholarship Information


  1. For the 2009-10 school year, 21 HMSA Kaimana Scholarships will be awarded to deserving students. Each scholarship is worth $2,000. Scholarship recipients will be selected from each high school athletic league and division statewide.
  2. Additional HMSA Kaimana Distinguished Scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded to three of the 21 recipients.
  3. Application forms can be downloaded from HMSA’s website (hmsa.com) and the Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) website (www.sportshigh.com).
  4. Completed application forms and letters of recommendation must be received by HHSAA by 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010.
  5. Winners will be selected based on athletic and academic achievement, community involvement, sportsmanship, and letters of recommendation.

Criteria for All Applicants


The applicant must:
  1. Be a high school senior graduating from a Hawaii high school in 2010.
  2. Have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.75.
  3. Have played on at least one school athletic team in a league-sanctioned sport during at least one of their high school years. Special consideration will be given to student athletes in lower-profile sports.

Scholarship Recipients


  1. Once an applicant has been selected as a recipient of an HMSA Kaimana Scholarship, the recipient:
    a. Will be notified in writing by HMSA.
    b. Will be awarded the scholarship during the Kaimana Awards luncheon in June 2010. Neighbor Island recipients will be provided airfare to attend the Kaimana Awards luncheon.

  2. Scholarship funds will be administered by HHSAA. Reimbursement requests for eligible educational expenses, up to the applicant’s scholarship limit, should be directed to HHSAA.

  1. All completed applications must be received by HHSAA by 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010.

  2. Applicant must provide a current home address and current mailing address to be notified if selected as a recipient of an HMSA Kaimana Scholarship.
  3. If additional space is needed, please type additional information on a separate page and attach.
  4. Applicant should list all school teams participated on. If applicant attended two different schools and participated on teams at each school, list both schools and all sports.
  5. Applicant’s GPA must be verified and signed by an authorized member of the school faculty.
  6. The application must include letters of recommendation from two faculty members at the applicant’s school. The recommendations should comment on the applicant’s dedication and determination, academic performance, sportsmanship, and personal character.
