HONOLULU – Willam “Bill” Villa has been named as the Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association’s new Executive Director, HIADA Board President Deren Oshiro announced today.

Villa recently announced that he will be retiring at the conclusion of this academic year from his current position as the Director of Athletics at Chaminade University, where he has spent the past 12 years.

Villa was Chaminade University’s first full-time Athletics Director and he has led the Silverswords program to unprecedented heights.  During his tenure, he expanded schedules for the school’s 10 sports, added full-time athletic department staff positions, established a fundraising gala and golf tournament, and oversaw the planning, development, and opening of Chaminade’s coaches’ offices, locker rooms, and athletic training facility.

A 1971 graduate of Kamehameha Schools Kapālama, Villa was a multi-sport athlete for the Warriors who also went on to play junior varsity basketball for the University of Hawaiʻi during the Fabulous Five years. He worked nearly two decades in the insurance business and also coached basketball at Kamehameha and Assets School.  He also served as the Director of Athletics for Assets School and Mid-Pacific Institute for nine and six years, respectively.

“I am extremely excited to have Bill join us as our Executive Director,” said Oshiro.  “He brings a wealth of experience as he spent a lot of time in the corporate world in addition to being involved in both high school and college athletics as a player, coach, and administrator.  Most importantly, he has proven to be a galvanizer of people under his charge, someone who can communicate effectively with groups who have differing opinions.”

Villa stated, "I am honored and humbled to have been selected as the HIADA Executive Director.  I will do my very best to serve our state’s high school athletic directors in ways that enhance the outstanding work that they already do.  I am looking forward to this opportunity to reacquaint myself with many former colleagues and friends, as well as to establish positive working relationships with new athletic directors.”

Villa’s primary duties will be to oversee HIADA (which recently incorporated as a nonprofit), and serve as its liaison with the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA).  In addition to these duties, Villa will also continue to serve on the Alaka`ina Foundation Board of Directors.
